Basic Reading & Spelling Profile

Checklist for Basic Reading & Spelling Difficulties:

Difficulty with sounding words out

Difficulty spelling words

Inability to self-correct reading or spelling errors

A history of reading and spelling difficulty in the family

A history of special class placements and/or remedial help

Frustration and unhappiness over reading

Difficulty in recognizing or producing fine speech sounds. A child might say "boo" instead of "blue".
An adult might say "stastistics" instead of "statistics".

Reading is a complex process. First of all, it involves learning a complicated and often confusing code of letters and sounds. Recent research shows that many people have difficulty with this part of reading because they have difficulty processing the actual sounds (phonemes) in a word. They are unable to segment, manipulate or blend sounds in spoken words. In turn, this pre-phonics problem (technically known as phonological awareness) interferes with the learning of letter and sound connections. Therefore, the process of "sounding out words" (and spelling them) never develops the way it should. Without direct remediation, the problem compounds itself over time leading to frustration with and avoidance of reading. A large and compelling body of reading research clearly states that weak phonological awareness is a leading cause of reading and spelling problems, including dyslexia. The Reading Foundation's Discover Reading© Program deals with the phonological issue very effectively. The program provides the "missing ingredient" for students with this issue.
