"The Discover Math Program has helped me understand fractions for the first time in my life."
The Reading Foundation has developed and offers the Discover Math Program, which was created to provide students with an understanding of math operations and their application. The program is multisensory in nature and is based on unique learning principles. These include:
- Discovery of basic facts through concrete experiences. - Using language to think about those experiences. - Using mental imagery to further internalize and understand basic math experiences, operations and principles. - Integrating and applying the understanding to problem solving.
Key Features:
Base-line assessment to determine the student's needs
Individual instruction paced to the student's level of need
Programs are linked to the objectives of the Common Curriculum Framework for the Western Canadian Provinces and are also valid for other parts of Canada and all US states
Manipulatives, language and mental imagery are used extensively to provide an understanding of math operations and concepts
All content areas in the math curriculum are covered: basic operations, measurement, geometry, word problems, etc
Students are taught sequentially, from a very basic level and build from there. "Gaps" in their background knowledge are filled by using this approach
Please note: The Reading Foundation does not use "skill and drill" type programs. Instead, our program develops a solid understanding of math concepts.
Rates
The cost of the initial assessment is $250 and includes the contact time with the student, consultation with parents and a written report. Cost of individual one-to-one instruction is $65 per hour. (All prices in Canadian dollars). The average time needed in the math program is four to five weeks (80 to 100 hours). The cost of 80 to 100 hours of instruction is therefore $5200 to $6500. There is no Goods and Services Tax (GST) on this service.
You may be able to deduct the amount paid to The Reading Foundation as a medical expense on your Canadian income tax return if the student attends the Calgary clinic. A properly worded receipt for this purpose is provided once the student exits the program in Calgary. (For income tax deductions, a referral from your family physician or an independent psychologist is strongly recommended.)
Dr. Truch is a chartered psychologist in Alberta. Because of this, fees may also be partially recovered from private health care plans that cover psychological services, provided the student attends the Calgary clinic.
If you are a US citizen visiting this web site, a trip to Calgary or Vancouver may be surprisingly affordable for you. Our hourly charge is usually less than a comparable clinical program in the United States. May we suggest planning a summer holiday in beautiful Calgary or Vancouver and bringing the gift of math to your son or daughter at the same time? Ideally, students attend the clinic each day for four hours of one-to-one instruction. They come five days a week for an average of four to five weeks for the Discover Math program. This represents a total of 80-100 hours of instruction. The impact on the understanding of math concepts and self-esteem in this short time frame is very dramatic. (Some students who have more severe math learning issues may require more than four to five weeks of intervention in the long run. Once the initial assessment is completed, a reasonable estimate of the time it will take to bring genuine change can be provided.) A modified routine is available for students who cannot miss school time. We offer after school and Saturday times for this purpose. Alternatively, students can attend for a few half days during the week, as well as four hours on Saturdays. Summer break, or other school holidays during the year are also a great time to come without having to miss school.
