“We are so happy to see our son pick up a book and want to read to us, it’s an amazing feeling.”

The Reading Foundation is pleased to present the Discover Reading Program – Beginnner Level, an exciting research-based reading and spelling program for children ages 4-6. Discover Reading – Beginner Level evolved from the Discover Reading Program – Basic Level which has been used at The Reading Foundation since 1998. The Discover Reading Program – Beginner Level has been getting excellent results. It has been used successfully in a one-to-one setting, as well as in the classroom.

Key Features:

Works from the whole to the parts by using a specially written children’s story to    introduce sounds (phonemes) and their respective letter representations (Sound Links)

Builds connections between sounds and Sound Links (letters) in a fun and effective way

 Teaches phonemic processing

Introduces students to correct pencil grips

Contains tracing and printing activities with upper and lower case letters

Develops visual memory for Sound Links and words

Introduces students to simple, complex and multisyllable words

 Develops fluency

 Uses word families and rhyming

Provides further multisensory reinforcement of the Sound Links with craft activities

Cost

The cost of the initial assessment is $250 and includes the testing with the student, consultation with parents and a written report. Cost of individual one-to-one instruction is $55.00 per hour. (All prices in Canadian dollars). The average length of a program is 80-100 hours, which amounts to $4400 - $5500. There is no Goods and Services Tax (GST) on this service.

You can deduct the amount paid to The Reading Foundation as a medical expense on your Canadian income tax return if the student attends the Calgary clinic. A properly worded receipt for this purpose is provided once the student exits the program in Calgary.

Because Dr. Truch is a chartered psychologist in Alberta, fees may also be partially recovered from private health care plans that cover psychological services, provided the student attends the Calgary clinic.

If you are a US citizen visiting this web site, a four-week trip to Calgary or Vancouver may be surprisingly affordable for you. That is because your US dollar is strong relative to the Canadian dollar and our hourly charge is usually less than a comparable clinical program in the United States. Use the calculator to determine the cost of our program (80 hours over four to five weeks) and the cost of travel and lodging in Canadian dollars. May we suggest planning a summer holiday in beautiful Calgary or Vancouver and bringing the gift of reading to your son or daughter at the same time? Program Length

Ideally, students attend each day for two to four hours of one-to-one instruction. The number of days a week varies for each student depending on their needs, but a total of about 80-100 hours of instruction is suggested. Some students may require more than this in the long run. Once the initial assessment is completed, a reasonable estimate of the time it will take to bring genuine change can be provided.
