Discover Math® is the newest
addition to the highly successful programs offered
by The Reading Foundation. Founded by Dr. Steve Truch,
The Reading Foundation has steadily gained
a reputation for excellent results since
its inception in 1990 in Calgary and 1994 in Vancouver.
The research and development for the Discover Math®
program began in 1992. Intensive one-on-one
work with students began soon after in 1993
in Calgary. The documented and published results were
very positive and encouraging.
Discover Math® was also introduced to a group
of California teachers by The Reading Foundation in
the summers of 1999 and 2000 under a special program.
Results from this project showed that the Discover
Math® Program could be successfully implemented
with groups of students. Again, results were
very encouraging.
Q. What are the
Levels of Certification for Discover Math®?
The Discover Math® three-tiered certification
program is designed to enhance teachers' knowledge
and math teaching skills.
Level One -
Certificate of Completion
- issued after the one-week comprehensive training
program
Level Two -
Discover Math® Trainer
- teachers with a Certificate of Completion apply
the Discover Math® Program with their students
and document their results
- Discover Math® Instructor certification is awarded
upon completion and verification of 60 hours of documented
instruction with students. An exam is also required
at this stage.
Level Three -
Discover Math® Instructor
- teachers at the Discover Math® Instructor level
can apply to become a Discover Math® Trainer(external
or internal). Further training (and fee) is needed
at this point.
Q.
How Effective Is the Program?
All gains are statistically highly significant.
(A detailed report is available upon request.)
Q.
Who Can be Trained?
Arrangements can be made with school districts and
interested tutors and individuals in private practice.
Training is usually offered in Calgary and Vancouver
during the summer months but can also be provided
"on-site" during the school year.
Q.
What Qualifications are Needed to
Become Certified?
Training is offered to all individuals with a suitable
background. This includes teachers, remedial math
specialists, clinicians, speech and language therapists,
and tutors with suitable educational backgrounds.
Q.
Who Certifies the Trainee?
The Reading Foundation (Calgary) Inc. certifies the
trainee if she/he conforms to the expectations provided
for each level of certification.
Q.
What is the cost?
The cost of one week of training is $1900.00 (GST
exempt). Cost includes a comprehensive 200 page Instructor's
Manual, an Instructor's Resource Binder, plus a set
of manipulatives. The 600 page Instructor's Resource
Binder is extremely helpful to teachers implementing
the program because it contains activities matched
to each major section of the Discover Math® program
and can be photocopied for student use.
Q.
How long is the training?
Training is one week and involves theory, methods,
demonstrations and practice time. Training weeks are
scheduled during the summer in both Calgary and Vancouver
but special arrangements can be made with school districts
interested in providing training during the school
year.
Q.
What about Workshops?
Dr. Steve Truch, Director of The Reading Foundation,
has had extensive presentation experience to teacher
groups across North America. Presentations for teacher
professional days can be arranged.
