A comprehensive and exciting remedial reading program for students of all ages.

Features of The Discover Reading© Program

Consists of Two Levels: The Basic Level is for preschoolers to age 12; The Upper Level is for students aged 13 to adult.

Both Levels:

Contain Lesson Plans and Sequence Charts to help the instructor plan and deliver lessons

and keep track of student progress

Work from the whole to the parts by using stories to introduce sounds and their respective

letter representations (Sound Links)

Connect the words taught to the 100 most common words found in children's literature

(Basic Level) and the 300 most common words with extensions to the 5,500 most common

words (Upper Level)

Incorporate spelling and writing activities

Develop visual memory for Sound Links and words

Develop word knowledge and comprehension

Provide explicit and comprehensive treatment of simple, complex and multisyllable words,

past tense, plurals and morphology

Develop fluency

While each of these features is not unique in reading instruction in and of itself, the combination of all these features in a single remedial program is unique. This makes the program as self-contained and therefore as practical and convenient as is possible for remedial teachers and clinicians. In addition, the program is multisensory, structured and sequential and so is of great value for "dyslexic" and "learning disabled" students. The program can also be easily adapted for general classroom use.

Components of both levels include:

Comprehensive Instructor's Manual (one Manual for both levels)

Three colorful story books with an engaging main character for the Basic Level:

Dee, The Hip Red Hen

Dee, The Hip Red Hen - Part Two

Dee, The Hip Red Hen - Part Three

One story book (Lea and Reed) for the Upper Level

The books are used to introduce the student to sounds and their respective letter representations. Those are called Sound Links in The Discover Reading© Program. Students are also taught phonemic processing skills of segmenting and blending through the stories. Activity Booklets then supplement these basic skills and provide further remedial activities that include all the known components of an effective remedial program including:

Phonemic segmenting

Phonemic blending

Phonemic processing in depth ("Sound Moves")

Sound and sound link connections

Reading activity sheets for each of the following levels:

Sound Links

Words

Sentences

Context

Visual memory for Sound Links and Words

Fluency challenges for each level above

Spelling

Visual memory for words ("Spelling in Your Mind")

Writing (Journal Activities)

Comprehension questions and activities

Sound Link Charts - there is a Consonant and a Vowel Sound Link Chart for each level. As the

student discovers new Sound Links through the stories, he prints his discoveries on the Charts.

Each of the three Books in the Basic Level has correlated Activity Booklets that provide

activities to reinforce the sounds and Sound Links.

Book 1 has 7 Activity Booklets

Book 2 has 9 Activity Booklets

Book 3 has 17 related Activity Booklets dealing with complex syllable processing

An additional 17 Activity Booklets for multisyllable activities

5 Morphology Booklets (prefixes and suffixes)

4 additional Activity Booklets dealing with more challenging suffixes

A similar format is used for the Upper Level and includes:

    9 Simple Syllable Activity Booklets

    13 Complex Syllable Activity Booklets

    13 Multisyllable Activity Booklets

4 Morphology Booklets (prefixes and suffixes)

4 additional Activity Booklets dealing with more challenging suffixes

    5 Supplementary Sound Link Booklets

Sound Link Tiles used for the "Sound Moves" activities and spelling

Sentences from Book 1 (Basic Level) printed on them (used for segmenting and blending)

Supplementary Tracing and Printing booklets (Basic Level) for students who need more

practice forming letters: (The Tracing and Printing booklets accompany Books 1 and 2 only)

Helpful Student Progress Charts for each of three different pacing and instructional sequences

(Basic Level) and two Student Progress Charts at the Upper Level.

Informal assessment measures for phonemic segmenting, blending, sound link connections,

and common words. There is a Form A and a Form B measure for each of the above.

Lesson Plans for instructors using the program.

Supplementary "Nonsense Stories" for impulsive readers in the habit of guessing

The Lesson Plans and Student Progress Charts are extremely helpful guides for all instructors to pace students through the many complexities of the remedial program.

The Lesson Plans and the Nonsense Stories are unique in our experience compared with other remedial reading programs.
