The Reading Foundation Hosts Summer Literacy Workshop for Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena
In a heartfelt effort to support children impacted by the devastating Eaton Fire, The Reading Foundation (TRF) partnered with the Boys & Girls Club of Pasadena (BGCP) to host a Summer Reading Workshop at the Mackenzie-Scott Branch. This initiative aimed to provide both educational enrichment and emotional support to young learners as they head into summer break.
The workshop welcomed 2nd to 5th-grade students for interactive, sensory-rich lessons designed to ignite a love of reading:
- Phonemic Awareness: Students explored the /ae/ sound and its various spellings to strengthen decoding skills.
- Vocabulary Building: A session on the prefixes in-, im-, ir-, and il- helped students understand their meanings and usage.
Each student also received a carefully selected book to take home—encouraging continued reading and offering a sense of normalcy. The workshop was facilitated by Devan Kublik from The Reading Foundation with the help of Elena McLaren, Education Specialist at BGCP. Their thoughtful collaboration created a supportive and joyful learning environment.
